Is Summer the Time for Crime?

Summertime is just around the corner. And with it come longer days, warmer weather, and plenty of sunshine. The conditions are perfect for the seemingly endless array of activities for everyone to enjoy, including concerts, festivals, parties, and events that are usually held outside in the summer.

Unfortunately, the conditions are also right for crime. But a few criminals don’t have to spoil the fun for everyone else if the proper precautions are taken.

First, let’s delve into the historical correlation between summertime and criminal activity. Throughout history, many scholars have lectured about the connection between crime rates and the weather. In fact, 2,400 years ago the Greek physician Hippocrates was one of the first individuals to study and discuss the influence weather has on criminal behavior. Crime has long been recognized as a social behavior, and nearly all human behaviors are affected by the weather that surrounds us, and by the change of seasons.

For decades, criminologists have been studying why spikes in the rates of murder and other violent crimes tend to occur in hot summer months. In law enforcement, this correlation has long been recognized with the oft-repeated phrase, “When ice cream sales go up, so do crime rates.”

The best explanation for this phenomenon is that there are more opportunities for crime in the summertime. The days are long, people are spending more time outdoors, and restless teens have the summer off from school. Numerous scholars even suggest that the heat may drive some to crime. In explaining the “heat hypothesis,” Craig A. Anderson says hot temps can increase aggressive motives and behaviors, resulting in 2.6% more murders and assaults in the United States during the summer than any other season of the year.

Spending more time outdoors during the summer months makes people more vulnerable to some crimes. Individuals put themselves at risk by attending large outdoor events with an abundance of people.

If you are organizing or hosting a large gathering, whether it is a sporting event, concert or show, a festival or party, the last thing you want to do is put your attendees at risk. So, what can be done to reduce the risk and improves the personal safety of your attendees and guests?

Aside from the seasonal increase in crime predicted for this summer, there is an overall increase in civil unrest and in the incidents of mass shootings in the United States in the last few years. The Gun Violence Archive shows that in 2022 so far there have been 185 mass shootings as of May 10.

Between the well-documented correlation between warmer weather and an increase in crime and the recent increases in violent crime, it may seem inevitable that crime will ruin your summertime event. KDNFS is here to help fix the problem.
