In a recent blog post titled “Is Summer the Time for Crime?” we discussed why we may be more vulnerable to crime in the summer. It is sad, but true, that the nicest weather can bring out the worst. K.D. National Force Security, LLC (KDNFS) is here to provide you with some summer safety tips to protect yourself and others around you.
Summer Safety Tips
- Situational Awareness: Situational Awareness is knowing your environment and what is occurring around you. This is especially important in the summer since we spend more time outdoors in open-air environments, often in crowds.
- Lock your doors: It is important to lock all doors throughout the house and your car doors as well. In the summertime, some like to keep their doors open for fresh air. These doors should only be opened if a family member is outside. Also, an increase in carjacking means it is important to lock car doors at all times, whether you are in the vehicle or not.
- Avoid Distractions: In the summertime, people like to take their daily activities outside. If you are on a run and/or walk, make sure you are able to hear what is going on around you. If you enjoy listening to music while out for a jog, try using just one earbud, so you can still hear what’s going on around you through the other ear. This will allow you to stay focused on what’s ahead.
- Keep Private Plans Private: Do not reveal personal plans to strangers. Going on vacation is exciting and you may be tempted to share the news, maybe even post about it on social media. Keep in mind that doing so allows anyone to know your house may be vacant.
- Move Away from the Potential Threats: If you believe there is going to be a potential threat, move to another area to avoid trouble. For example, you may witness an argument that could become physical or violent. When this occurs, get away from the confrontation. Sometimes you can’t avoid walking or traveling alone. When walking by yourself, if you see a threatening person or group, take action (like crossing the street or making a phone call) to avoid coming into contact. It is important to trust your instinct if you believe there is going to be a threat. If you feel that you are in danger as a result of the threat, it may be best to call 911.
